For this writer, I have had both types of luggage throughout my travels. I find that I can cram more items into a soft-side bag. I love the sleekness of the hard-shell luggage, however. Currently, I am using hard-shell luggage and loving it. The only thing I miss about soft-side luggage is the smaller outside pockets that you could jam last minute items in if you forgot to pack them inside the bag.
The one thing I wish I had figured out earlier was that the larger dual wheels work best on carpet and other terrain. I bought a few sets of luggage with the small single caster wheels, and they couldn’t roll across anything that wasn’t perfectly smooth. Also, the bags tended to tip over easily. I have since donated these bags to charity.

They are a lighter weight hard-shell bag. They handle carpet like a champ even when stuffed full and weighed down by a backpack resting on top. They also haven’t ever tipped over. They are also moderately priced around $159.00 for the three piece luggage sets. They also have built in TSA-approved locks. I also like being able to wipe down the bags if they get dirty.
I have taken these bags on road trips and a few international travel cruises. So far so good. The carry-on bag size fits well in the overhead bin on the airplane and the larger size hard-side suitcase has been able to survive airport baggage handlers and the airport carousels.
